Deeby specifically told me that this is not 12 Monkeys 2. Probably because that would make this a sequel when it’s clearly a prequel. Or a midquel?

Here’s some stuff for this week:

  • As we mentioned, La Jetée, a 1962 French short film, serves as the inspiration for 12 Monkeys. The director Chris Marker referred to it as a Photo Novel, due to its use of still photos. According to Terry Gilliam, he hadn’t seen the short before filming.
  • The Time Traveller’s Wife, the 2003 novel and 2009 film starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams also take inspiration from La Jetée, focusing more on the relationship.
  • Brad Pitt‘s Golden Globe-winning – and Oscar-nominated – performance as Jeffrey Goines was helped in part by Terry Gilliam taking away Pitt’s cigarettes.
  • 12 Monkeysfirst and last shot are pretty similar. Jacob T. Swinney’s video shows the difference between the first and last frames from a series of films.

That’s it for this week. See you next week, when I’ll be pitching a (Hammer) Horrible biopic.
