24 – Rear Window

We’re back to normal programming this week, and Deeby’s gone big with a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 thriller, Rear Window.

Here’s some facts I’ve got for you this week:

  • Rear Window is one of several films with a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Other films on this exclusive list includes The TerminatorMary Poppins, the animated version of The Grinch and, for a short period, the Seth Rogen animated film Sausage Party.

  • The film is adapted from ‘It Had to be Murder’, a short novel by prolific author Cornell Woolrich. The love story and the other neighbours were added to the story by Hitchcock and John Michael Hayes, the writer of the screenplay.
    • Many of of Woolrich’s stories have been adapted into radio plays and films – including 2001’s Original Sin starring Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie. The film, which currently has a 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, got Jolie a Razzie nomination for Worst Actress.
  • We briefly spoke about the 1998 Rear Window remake starring the late Christopher Reeve. The ABC TV Movie was Reeve’s first role after the 1995 horse riding accident which left the actor paralysed and won him a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor in a miniseries or TV Movie.
  • Hitchcock’s second directorial feature, The Mountain Eagle, is considered a lost film; there are no known copies remaining of the 1927 silent film. The Mountain Eagle is number one on the BFI’s 75 Most Wanted list.
    • At least 13 of the 75 films on the list have since been discovered.

  • The Simpsons has made several references to Hitchcock’s work over the years:
    • The season 6 premiere episode ‘Bart of Darkness’ is the episode which parodied Rear Window.
    • A Treehouse of Horror episode showcased their own version of Strangers on a Train, with Bart and Lisa in Farley Granger and Robert Walker’s lead roles.
    • References are also made to The BirdsVertigoNorth by Northwest and Psycho.

That’s all I’ve got for this week – here’s some of Henry’s music to play us out:

Next week, Deeby and I are Breaking Bad!
